Application Proccess
Every year, we receive a large number of applications for a limited number of slots. We evaluate our applicants holistically and without bias. You can read more about what we look for in our scholars here.
Our application process is designed with multiple steps so we can get to know you better. We are intentional about making the application process as intellectual and thought-provoking as possible for you as well. We want you to have fun! THE APPLICATION FOR THE 2025 STEPUP SCHOLARS WILL OPEN IN JANUARY 2025
1
Optional Essays
The first round of the application process is an online form with optional essays and some required passages. The essays will be an avenue to share your interests and passions. While we strongly recommend answering the essay prompts. we recognize that writing ability differs so we are committed to keeping the essays optional.
2
Required Passages
The other part of the online application is two Reading Passages. Usually, one of the passages is scientific and the other is literature-based or historical. We try to choose stimulating pieces written by Nigerian authors. In the past, we have included texts written by Obafemi Awolowo and microbiological research from Covenant University, Nigeria. The point is to expose you to Nigerian thought leaders, writing styles, and research: things you might not have access to in the traditional Nigerian curriculum.
Each passage is followed by some required questions. You do not need to have any particular scientific or historical background to understand the passages and answer the questions. The questions have no objective right or wrong answer and exist simply to test how you think.

Interviews
After an initial screening using the online application, we will invite promising applicants for interviews. The interviews will be structured to help us better understand your expectations and goals in the StepUp Scholars program. The interviews are in two parts: a behavioral interview and a Discussion. The behavioral interview is a classic interview with questions about your previous experiences. The Discussion is a conversation with your interviewer about a piece of writing that will be given to you a few days before the interview. Here are some tips for the interviews!
