We do not admit StepUp Scholars based on previous academic accomplishments, we do think it is necessary to show to us that you can cope in a fast-paced, evolving intellectual arena. We need to see that you are able to thrive in the course rigor you are currently exposed to and have an interest in learning more. 

Passion

We want to see drive and tenacity in our scholars. Research can be long and hard many times but it is a deeply rewarding enterprise if you have the motivation to see it through.

Problem Solving

Research is one of the most fundamental applications of problem-solving. We love to see candidates who recognize ambiguities and complexities in the world around them and consciously try to understand those problems and find solutions.

Creativity

Creativity is essential throughout every phase of research. It plays a role in formulating the question, selecting the method to investigate it, and interpreting the findings. How have you shown creativity in the past?

Curiosity

The ability to ask questions is a skill we love to see in our candidates. Good questions predicate good research. Great candidates for the StepUp scholars are those who take it upon themselves to find answers to questions.
